The Runnin’ Bulldogs baseball team picked up their second win in a row Saturday afternoon at home over Valparaiso University winning 2-1.

The Crusaders had recently come off a 10-9 win over No. 4 ranked Arkansas only to be defeated by starting pitcher Conner Scarborough and the rest of the Gardner-Webb Bulldogs.

Scarborough went 6.1 innings, allowing six hits, one walk, and striking out five to help push Gardner-Webb’s overall record to 7-3.

The ‘Dogs were the first to make the move on the score board after freshman infielder Scott Johnson picked up a base hit after one out, and later Scott Coleman hit a two out single to right field setting up Johns Harris to send them both in after a hit to left field.  Harris had 2 RBIs and went 2-3 over the course of the day.

Going into the seventh inning, Valpo tried to rally back for the lead but was tripped up by a Henry Rundio and Johnson double play to help Jeff Howell exit the inning safely up 2-0.

In the top of the eighth a leadoff error by the ‘Dogs gave the Crusaders a chance to tie up the score after getting up on the scoreboard, but Howell got out of it; first with an out to first after a sacrifice bunt grounder and a strike out to end the inning.

It came down to the ninth inning for Adam Izokovic to give Gardner-Webb the win and seal the deal. Izokovic landed his 15th career save by striking the last two batters out to give him the win and end the game.

Gardner-Webb finished the day off with Johnson hitting 2 for 3, Brantley Smith and Adam McFarland both going 1-3, and Coleman hitting 1-3.

The Bulldogs look to play Albany University Sunday afternoon at John Henry Moss Stadium at 2 pm.
