The Department of Theatre Arts has announced auditions for a stirring drama, set in Poland in 1939 as the Nazis invade. The play is called, “#8” originally written by Jean Battlo.

The production of the play will be directed by New York director Dr. Bill Martin. Martin has had previous experience with Gardner-Webb, as he also directed “Is He Dead?” in 2012.

“Jean Battlo’s play “#8” is a Holocaust love story. In an unnamed eastern European country in 1939 the Stein family is faced with difficult choices. The family’s only way out of the country is in the back of a grocery truck. Their place on the truck is insured when Moshe draws the number eight in a lottery. But some unexpected twists alter the landscape all the way to the end of this intense drama,” said GWU Theater Department.

The cast includes four adults (2 male, 2 female) and two children (one young teenage boy, one younger girl). The Theater Department would like to have a boy that can play a violin.

Students auditioning should prepare a 60 second monologue.  Scripts are available for perusal at the Gardner-Webb University Library and at the Theatre Department in the Communications Building.

The auditions will be held at the Millennium Playhouse, March 16- 17, at 7 p.m.
