Wearing all black in support of Earth Day, the Gardner-Webb Bulldogs baseball team defeated conference foe Charleston Southern (CSU) 1-0 in the first of a three game set on Friday, April 22.

Starting on the mound for the Bulldogs was senior right hander Brad Haymes. Haymes came into Friday’s contest with a 7-1 overall record, a 2.23 ERA and having thrown two straight complete games – including an 9-0 shutout over High Point.

Haymes shined again against CSU, throwing another complete game with 10 strikeouts, and allowing just five hits on 100 pitches. He also struck out the first six batters of the game in order. Haymes now leads the NCAA with six complete games this season and leads the Big South with three shutout games vs conference opponents this year.

There was not much offense for GWU in the game, as they had just five hits. However, senior Taylor Fisher started off the bottom of the sixth inning with a triple, followed by freshman Justin Kunz getting a double to center field to score the game winning run.

Gardner-Webb’s baseball team came out victorious in the following two games against CSU, 21-2 on April 23 and 5-2 on April 25.
