Gardner-Webb Wrestling Defeats VMI in Conference Match

Gardner-Webb wrestling started the night off right against Virginia Military Institute Friday, with the light weight classes pushing through their opponents to gain major points for the team. As the heavy weight class approached the mat, both teams were stacked forcing very competitive match-ups. The Bulldogs came out on top with a 19-12 victory over the Keydets.

Over the next month the team will use previous matches to gain knowledge of how to be better prepared for the 2013 Southern Conference Championship.

“Being my Alma Mater makes it special, not many are given this chance. I am now able to put my input into the team how I want to, I can mold the guys. Being from the school makes this position part of me,” said head coach Daniel Elliott about the conference match.

The guys have a long way to go until the championship, more training and practice will take place for the upcoming matches. This will help to improve their performance so when the best come knocking at the door they can respond with a blowing response.

Gardner-Webb will hit the road Monday, January 28 traveling to Campbell University for a dual match.

GWU Intramurals to Participate in MLK Basketball Tournament

“Most of all I just want the students to have fun.” Intramural adviser Brian Arnold revealed as he prepares to take a few Gardner-Webb students to Wake Forest University for the annual Martin Luther King intramural basketball tournament.

“It’s actually called an extramural tournament because intramural events remain on campus.” Arnold said. “But the tournament will consist of several intramural teams and clubs from different colleges and universities around the state.”

Gardner-Webb got involved just last year when the director, T.J. Peel, emailed Arnold. He got a group together last year and the guys had a good time. He’s hoping for the same this year.

“I didn’t cut anyone, and didn’t tell anyone they couldn’t go. Twelve people signed up and that’s who I decided to take,” Arnold said.

“I’m excited to be playing in the tournament against all the different teams.” said one of the returning players, Quinton Burton. “There will be teams playing from all over the state including Duke, UNC, Wake Forest, and Winston Salem.”

With the tournament happening so early in the semester, the boys didn’t have time to practice. Arnold said most intramural teams would be in the same condition, but the club teams may be more organized.

Everyone gets a t-shirt for going to the tournament and the winner receives a trophy.

“If we go and have fun, I think that takes care of enough,” Arnold said.

Runnin’ Bulldogs Defeat Coastal in Buzzer Beater

The Coastal Carolina game from tip-off seemed to be a tough one for Gardner-Webb with Coastal staying on top for most of the game. The final seconds of the game kept fans on their toes. Donta Harper missed a shot with 14.7 seconds left on the clock that freshman Jerome Hill followed up with a basket. Max Landis then missed a shot with 0.4 seconds left that Hill was able to time up and tap into the basket to win the game over Coastal by one, 66-65.

Kevin Hartley shot 2-2 from the three-point line Wednesday night, which aided the Bulldogs in their one point victory over the Chanticleers.

“It’s a very exciting moment for me when the ball leaves my hands and I know it’s going to go in,” said Hartley.

The Runnin’ Bulldogs had an attitude of redemption leading into the game Wednesday night, as they lost in their last match up against the Chanticleers in the 2011-2012 season. “Coastal is a more physical and athletic team than most teams we will play all season,” said head coach Chris Holtman on Coastal Carolina. Holtman added how character and poise helped his team pull out the victory this season as opposed to last. “I am extremely proud and happy for these young men, they deserved this win,” said Holtman.

Gardner-Webb will take on Radford this Saturday, January 19 at home in Paul Porter Arena. “Radford is a different team from Coastal, in order to defeat them we need to work on playing better for longer periods of time, ” said Holtman about preparations for Saturday’s game. Tip- off for Saturday’s game is 7 p.m.

Welcome Back Dance

This Friday, January 11, the office of Student Activities will be throwing a celebratory welcome back dance for all students. The dance will take place in the Tucker Student Center and will last from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m.

The Student Activities office, alongside the office of Alumni relations, is hosting the dance in efforts to pump the students up for the semester ahead.

Due to the lack of activity on campus over the course of the first week of classes, the two offices have decided to provide the students with an enjoyable outlet for their energy, according to Communications Coordinator for Alumni Relations and the Bulldog Club, Brad Vaughn.

“There will be a DJ for the students as well as snacks and refreshments,” said Vaughn.

In addition to the traditional festivities accompanying a dance, there will also be a countdown to midnight. Come on out to usher in the new semester with fellow students this Friday.
