One of these many rich traditions is Homecoming Court.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s great to see people that are nominated by their class, and see them supported by other students,\u201d explained Emily DeVries, chair of special events for the GWU Student Government Association.<\/p>\n<p>Four senior girls have been nominated by their class, and the entire student body has the opportunity participate in the election process by logging into WebbConnect to vote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Homecoming candidates are people that represent the Gardner-Webb Community and change it for the better,\u201d added DeVries. \u201cThe queen should ultimately reflect that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The nomination for Homecoming Queen by her roommate came as quite a surprise for <strong>Lydia Hill<\/strong> of Durham, NC.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1529\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1529\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gwu-today.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/IMG_5920_Lydia_Hill.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1529\" src=\"https:\/\/gwu-today.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/IMG_5920_Lydia_Hill-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"Lydia Hill. Photo by Chelsea Sydnor. \" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gwu-today.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/IMG_5920_Lydia_Hill-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/gwu-today.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/IMG_5920_Lydia_Hill-683x1024.jpg 683w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1529\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lydia Hill.<br \/>Photo by Anna Hulsey.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cI wasn\u2019t sure if I should run,\u201d Hill recalled. \u201cBut once people told me \u2018you should do it, you should do it!\u2019 I got really excited.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ultimately, Hill chose to run because of the encouragement of others and it was something much different than she had ever done before.<\/p>\n<p>Hill is active in a variety of organizations around campus, including Focus, Campus Ministries United and Honors Student Association. \u201cI have a really well-rounded Gardner-Webb experience,\u201d she shared. \u201cI\u2019ve gotten to do so many things here that I never would have had the opportunity to do if I hadn\u2019t gone to a school like this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She loves Gardner-Webb because of how genuine everyone on campus is, especially faculty and staff. \u201cThey are really invested in us, and want to help us succeed,\u201d Hill explained.<\/p>\n<p>Once she graduates in May, Hill plans to get married and search for a job that utilizes the skills she has gained through her Marketing major.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Katie Smith<\/strong> of Concord, NC is both thrilled and honored to be nominated for Homecoming Queen. Photo by Chelsea Sydnor. \" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gwu-today.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/IMG_5944_Kaitlyn_Smith-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/gwu-today.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/IMG_5944_Kaitlyn_Smith-683x1024.jpg 683w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1528\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Katie Smith.<br \/>Photo by Anna Hulsey.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cIn August my grandmother passed, followed by my brother\u2019s friend as well as a lady that I cared for as a CNA,\u201d Smith recalled. \u201cThis is an opportunity for my family to focus on something happier for a little while.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Smith is confident that any of the candidates this year will be a good choice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re all awesome,\u201d Smith explained. \u201cWhenever I tell people to vote, I don\u2019t mean just for me. Anyone that is running would be great.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, Smith does feel that her Nursing major and career choice make her unique. \u201cThe work that I do and the interactions that I have on a daily basis are very different,\u201d she admitted. \u201cThey will be life and death situations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Smith\u2019s favorite part about Gardner-Webb is the people that she gets to spend time with. \u201cI love the people who cook, the people who clean, the people that teach me things and the people I get to live with that have become my best friends,\u201d she shared.<\/p>\n<p>After graduation, Smith plans to work for a few years to gain experience and attend UNC Chapel Hill to get her Doctor of Nursing Program (DNP), which will allow her to work under the supervision of a doctor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can open a practice together,\u201d she added. \u201cIt can be a family practice so that I will be able to treat patients of all ages.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Merideth Byl<\/strong> of Tucson, AZ was very flattered by her nomination.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1530\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1530\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gwu-today.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/IMG_5957_Merideth_Byl.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1530\" src=\"https:\/\/gwu-today.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/IMG_5957_Merideth_Byl-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"Meredith Byl. Photo by Chelsea Sydnor. \" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gwu-today.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/IMG_5957_Merideth_Byl-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/gwu-today.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/IMG_5957_Merideth_Byl-683x1024.jpg 683w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1530\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Meredith Byl.<br \/>Photo by Anna Hulsey.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cIt was an honor that someone thought I was worthy of being a representative,\u201d Byl shared. \u201cI really wanted to respect that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Byl feels she\u2019s among friends with the other nominees. \u201cWe are all really different,\u201d she explained. \u201cWe each bring something valuable to the table.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her favorite part of Gardner-Webb is the small-school atmosphere. \u201cWe\u2019re part of a community of people that genuinely wants you to be a better person both inside and outside of the classroom,\u201d she shared. \u201cYou don\u2019t find that everywhere.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While she will continue to \u201cbleed runnin\u2019 bulldog red\u201d after graduation, Byl plans to carry her Biology major forward by eventually attending medical school.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Katie Loftin <\/strong>was ecstatic to be nominated for Homecoming Queen, as well. Photo by Chelsea Sydnor\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gwu-today.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/IMG_5931_Katie_Loftin-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/gwu-today.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/IMG_5931_Katie_Loftin-683x1024.jpg 683w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1527\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Katie Loftin.<br \/>Photo by Anna Hulsey.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cEveryone was really excited for me,\u201d she recalled.<\/p>\n<p>Loftin also feels that the nomination has given her an exciting opportunity before she graduates in December.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s something fun for my last semester,\u201d she explained. \u201cI never really get to go to football games because I play volleyball, but this will be our Parent Weekend and my parents will be here, so it works out really well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Loftin is part of many different organizations, including Alpha Chi, Tri Beta, Sigma Zeta, Gamma Sigma Epsilon and is the secretary of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.<\/p>\n<p>She loves Gardner-Webb because it feels like a family. \u201cEveryone is so close and willing to help you, and see you succeed,\u201d she shared.<\/p>\n<p>After graduation, Loftin plans to get married and hopes to have a career as either a wedding planner, a florist or a Vet Tech. \u201cWe\u2019re going to move around a lot, so it\u2019s hard to decide right now,\u201d she explained. \u201cI\u2019ll be more sure once we\u2019re settled.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vote for one of the candidates by 5:00 PM October 8th and see the winner crowned at Saturday evening\u2019s football game against Liberty University.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\"><p>By: Chelsea Sydnor Homecoming is a chance for Gardner-Webb to honor and build upon traditions.
