Photo by Hannah Haggerty.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The play is based on the lives of three old ladies and their goal to ensure the happiness of their niece \u00a0through the use of colorful schemes. The protagonists were unconventional characters\u2014speaking their minds, performing interesting rituals and conducting secret meetings. During a \u201dtruth ceremony,\u201d all parties could only tell the truth, leading to an interesting outcome.<\/p>\n<p>The three ladies\u2014distinct types of grandmothers in their own accord\u2014are played by Caroline Dedmon, Deany Rae Martin and former adjunct professor at Gardner-Webb, Kyrin Packard. In spite of their differences, the grandmothers work together to execute their happiness-laden plans for their loving niece, Thia, who is played by junior ASL major Christina Ewing.<\/p>\n<p>As the play began, Packard (as the eldest aunt, Mary Novella) made the audience laugh from her very first line, proving to be the crowd\u2019s favorite character. \u00a0She played her role realistically and held the audience at her palm with the deliverance of every comedic line.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1946\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1946\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gwu-today.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/IMG_0621.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1946\" src=\"https:\/\/gwu-today.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/IMG_0621-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"Photo by Hannah Haggerty. \" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gwu-today.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/IMG_0621-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/gwu-today.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/IMG_0621-683x1024.jpg 683w, https:\/\/gwu-today.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/IMG_0621.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1946\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Caroline Dedmond portraying the role of one of the aunts. Photo by Hannah Haggerty.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The laughter in the theatre became so loud and contagious that the actors had to hold for laughs several times.\u00a0The play received a standing ovation , and cheers only grew louder as the three aunts took their bows.\u00a0Through their applause and cheers, the audience seemed to agree that the premier was well worth their time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe play is so funny you\u2019ll lose your dentures,&#8221; said senior Daniel Woodie.<\/p>\n<p>Christian Vaughan, a freshman, also agreed and added, \u201cOverall, I felt that the complex, yet manageable plot and clever humor came together quite nicely.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI-Ya-I-Ya-O\u201d will continue to run in the Millennium Playhouse on Nov. 21 at 7:30 p.m., and Nov. 22 at 2:30 p.m.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\"><p>It was hard to find a seat in Gardner-Webb\u2019s Millennium Playhouse on Nov. 19 for the grand premier of the comedy \u201cI-Ya-I-Ya-O\u201d written by Claude Douglas Brian.
