1. Josephine Baker<\/a> (1906-1975)<\/em><\/p>\n Baker is one of the first African-American women to star in a major motion picture. She\u00a0helped integrate the big screen in America\u00a0and\u00a0was familiar with the challenges women faced in the African-American community.\u00a0In an effort to seek balance, she\u00a0started speaking out.<\/p>\n 2. Eva Clayton<\/a> (1934- )<\/em><\/p>\n Clayton was the first African-American congresswoman since 1901 for NC. The civil rights movement pushed her to be active in civic and political affairs.<\/p>\n 3. Carter G. Woodson<\/a> (1875-1950)<\/em><\/p>\n Historian, author, journalist and founder of the African-American Historical Association. He was one of the first scholars to study African-American history.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n 4. Carol Moseley-Braun<\/a> (1947- )<\/em><\/p>\n As the\u00a0first African-American woman to be elected to the U.S. Senate in 1992, Moseley-Braun tackled women’s and civil rights, and served on the Senate Finance Committee.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n 5.
