{"id":2245,"date":"2016-02-20T12:15:00","date_gmt":"2016-02-20T17:15:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gwu-today.com\/?p=2245"},"modified":"2016-02-20T14:00:29","modified_gmt":"2016-02-20T19:00:29","slug":"2245","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gwu-today.com\/?p=2245","title":{"rendered":"Campus organizations come together for fundraiser"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Four of Gardner-Webb\u2019s performance groups will gather at the Dover Theater Saturday,\u00a0February 20, at 7 p.m., to raise money for two organizations: Happy Hands in Honduras, and\u00a0Lavosi in Guatemala.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, the original \u201cMegabash\u201d raised over $700, and included performances by Joyful\u00a0Hands, Gospel Choir and Heart of Fire. This year, the AcaFelons will be adding their talents to\u00a0the \u201cMegabash 2.0,\u201d and all of the groups are hoping to improve on last year\u2019s fundraising\u00a0success.<\/p>\n<p>Christina Ewing, a member of Joyful Hands and one of the event organizers, said that they have\u00a0been planning the event since October of 2015. \u201cWe contacted the clubs and gauged their\u00a0interests,\u201d said Ewing. \u201c[And] we were hoping to add the AcaFelons to the original lineup, as\u00a0they had to miss the event last year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nathaniel Parks, of the AcaFelons, said that the group was on board with the event as soon as\u00a0they were contacted. The AcaFelons are planning on premiering a new arrangement and showing off some new members. \u201cIt fits with our theme of trying to be very service oriented,\u201dsaid Parks. \u201c[The AcaFelons] like to use our abilities to help with a good cause.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Happy Hands is a Christian school in Honduras that helps the Deaf community, and offers\u00a0classes for Pre-K though ninth grade. Lavosi is a place of education for Deaf people in\u00a0Guatemala, and offers classes for first grade through sixth grade. Originally, there was difficulty\u00a0deciding which organization to support. \u201cLots of mission trips are taken to these areas, so\u00a0people at [Gardner-Webb] are good friends [with each organization],\u201d said Ewing. However, in\u00a0the end it was decided that the best course of action was to support both organizations.<\/p>\n<p>Stephanie Oliver, the advisor for the Joyful Hands Ministry Team, and one of the organizers of\u00a0Megabash 2.0, said that \u201cplanning for the event has been overwhelming at times, but it will be\u00a0worth it to provide support to a good cause.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In order to raise money for these organizations, Gardner-Webb students, faculty and staff, will\u00a0be charged $3 for admission. Community members will be charged $5. The parents of the\u00a0children at Happy Hands will also be selling handmade jewelry at the event.
