{"id":2350,"date":"2016-02-29T14:14:38","date_gmt":"2016-02-29T19:14:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gwu-today.com\/?p=2350"},"modified":"2016-03-01T20:33:01","modified_gmt":"2016-03-02T01:33:01","slug":"students-learn-to-cut-to-the-chase-communication-new-media-major-highlight","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gwu-today.com\/?p=2350","title":{"rendered":"Balancing academics with new media &#8211; Communication &#038; New Media Major Highlight"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By: Chelsea Sydnor<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Department of Communication &amp; New Media at Gardner-Webb offers numerous majors of concentration, including:\u00a0 Graphic Design, Video\/ Film, Photography and Public Relations. Options also include Journalism with a focus in News-Editorial, Photojournalism and Broadcast.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMajoring in Communication &amp; New Media helps students learn to research by asking questions and digging to find information,\u201d said Dr. Bob Carey, chair of the department for almost 13 years. \u201cAll of the concentrations are about storytelling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to Carey, the program courses prepare students for jobs in the real world, in that they will be prepared to research and \u201ccut to the chase.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2353\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2353\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gwu-today.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/IMG_9810-XL.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2353\" src=\"https:\/\/gwu-today.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/IMG_9810-XL-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"A banner display of the sub-majors offered in the Communication Studies Hall. She also enjoys having access to the radio station on campus.<\/p>\n<p>However, LuVisi also feels that not many of her classes have been specifically focused on her concentration.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere aren\u2019t a lot of broadcast journalism-focused classes, aside from Announcing and Audio Production,\u201d she said. \u201cIt would be nice to have some more courses added to the curriculum that focus more on radio or broadcasting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kimberly Johnston is a senior majoring in Video and Film and hopes\u00a0to one day become a producer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe creative process is the best part of my major,\u201d said Johnston. \u201cThere are so many great programs to edit and film.<\/p>\n<p>However, Johnston also believes there are drawbacks to Video and Film careers. \u201cEditing is time-consuming,\u201d she explained. \u201cThe equipment can also be expensive, and you never know for sure if it will be right for you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Senior Matt Johnson is majoring in Journalism-Editing, and feels that journalism provides students the chance to meet people from all around campus in order to tell stories of success.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[The professors] are great and will work with students that do not understand,\u201d said Johnson. \u201cThey will help you learn how news reporting and editing really works.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Carey also believes that the faculty is one of the best things about the department.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2352\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2352\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gwu-today.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/IMG_9806-XL.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2352\" src=\"https:\/\/gwu-today.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/IMG_9806-XL-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"A student walks the ramp to enter into the Communication Studies Hall.
