Friday night, April 29, students gathered on the quad to eat popcorn, play corn hole and watch the Acafelons, Note This and Darelle Dove perform in the first Party on the Patio.<\/p>\n

Acafelons premiered five new songs, which included songs put together by Acafelon members, and had Darelle Dove, GWU alumnus and former Acafelon member, perform with them in an older song. Dove spoke of his audition for the show America\u2019s Got Talent, and performed three of his spoken word pieces.<\/p>\n

This was also the first performance of Note This, a new community acapella group that includes GWU members, on the Gardner-Webb campus. They hope to compete in acapella competitions in the coming year.<\/p>\n

Despite both being acapella groups in the same area, there is no rivalry between Note This and Acafelons. \u201cSo many schools have four or five [acapella] groups,\u201d said Nathan Hawsey, leader of Note This.<\/p>\n

Hawsey did acapella in high school, where they participated in various competitions. Once Howsey got to college, he decided to continue the no-instrument musical ensemble.<\/p>\n

The Acafelons usually have their end of the year concert in the Dover Theater, but scheduling conflicts required them to think outside the box. \u201cProfessor Harmon suggested the patio (located at the front of O.M.G., the music building) and we were like, \u2018oh yeah, sure, we\u2019ll give that a shot,\u2019\u201d said Acafelon member Nathanial Parks.<\/p>\n

The new venue had its own challenges however, as they had to account for a sound system that had to be set up in an outdoor environment. In the end the party on the patio came together for a musically sound end to the semester.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
