{"id":3855,"date":"2017-10-26T15:23:37","date_gmt":"2017-10-26T19:23:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gwu-today.com\/?p=3855"},"modified":"2017-10-28T21:35:29","modified_gmt":"2017-10-29T01:35:29","slug":"gardner-webb-to-host-annual-octoberfest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gwu-today.com\/?p=3855","title":{"rendered":"Gardner-Webb to host annual Octoberfest"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><\/em><strong>By Sthefany Flores<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Gardner-Webb University is expecting between 800 and 1,000 children to attend tonight\u2019s Octoberfest.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Octoberfest was created by Sandy Hammett, Noel Disability Specialist, in order to provide an event for children in foster homes. In the early 2000s, Gardner-Webb adopted the event in order to create more volunteer opportunities for students.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was raised in an orphanage in the North Carolina mountains,\u201d Hammett said. \u201cEach year a group of college students would visit the orphanage and put on a fall festival. That had a big impact for many of the kids including myself.\u201d Because of this experience, she wanted to do the same for the community surrounding Gardner-Webb.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Mindy Robinson, coordinator for Community Empowerment and Student Ministries, is in charge of organizing this year\u2019s Octoberfest.
