Andrea Thomas, the Executive Secretary for Student Government Association, SGA, has plans to be successful while finishing out her senior year.
Her role as Executive Secretary is to create emails, take notes at meetings and keep the schedule up to date for members and facility. “I make the schedule and make sure everybody is on the same page,” said Thomas.
Thomas said SGA wants to improve their image around campus because many people see them as students trying to gain an achievement for their resume. This is far from the truth; many of the members like Thomas want to be part of SGA to help improve Gardner-Webb.
As a group, SGA went to Saint Louis the beginning of October and they learned how to affect diversity on campus. Thomas said her goal is to create a diverse committee that will help the minority groups around campus, like disabled students.
Thomas joined SGA as a freshman, to gain friends since she is a shy person. Last year, the counsel went to Charleston to do bonding exercises and this helped her form good friendships. While doing this they rewrote the SGA Constitution to make a better structure so students can get to them easier.
Thomas is a psychology major from Shelby, N.C. She loved growing up there.
“One thing I love about Shelby is, it is right between the mountains and the big city like Charlotte,” said Thomas. “They filmed the Hunger Games when I was a senior [in high school] and I was super involved in theatre. They had a casting call and told all liberal theatre teachers. So I just went to it and they hired me.”
Outside of the SGA, Thomas enjoys reading, writing, playing the ukulele and being around her friends. After school she wants to attend graduate school for psychology and social justice issues at North Carolina State University in Raleigh, NC.
