The Runnin’ Bulldogs Men’s Basketball team lost in 58-54 in a shocker Thursday night to last-place Radford University. GWU failed to record a single field goal in the last three minutes of the game, compounded by the Highlanders ending the game on an 8-2 run meant an unexpected loss for the Runnin’ Bulldogs.
It was the Highlanders’ first road win of the year, which is surprising considering the reputation Paul Porter Arena has earned throughout the conference. With the development of the “Holtmaniancs”, the student section that dons themed costumes and body paint for every home game, The Bulldogs have only dropped three home games all year including last night’s contest.
Neither team did much to take control of the game from their opponent all night. The Bulldogs committed 17 turnovers that led to 15 points for the Highlanders. The ‘Dogs’ lone bright spot was a 50% (5-10) conversion rate beyond the three point arc but still only managed to shoot 40% total from the field. The Highlanders bested the ‘dogs in shooting percentage by a paltry two percentage points.
Tashan Newsome led all scorers with fourteen points and added another 7 boards. Forward Javonte Green led the Highlanders on the stat sheet with twelve, including three crucial buckets in the last two minutes to all but put the ‘dogs away. Green tied the game with just less than two minutes to play after the Highlanders missed two free throws. He then put the Highlanders up two on the next possession after turning a GWU turnover into a dunk on the other end. Roughly a minute later he put the ‘Dogs away for good hitting an easy layup with sixteen seconds left to push the score to 57-54.
The ‘Dogs will look to get back on the winning track Saturday night when VMI comes to Boiling Springs.
