BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.– On Oct. 5, Gardner-Webb University’s new Flag Football team played its first scrimmage against Clemson University and won 20-6. The scrimmage marks an exciting milestone for the program as they prepare to compete in the Big South Conference for the 2027-2028 academic year.
The university officially announced the addition of its Flag Football and Acrobatics and Tumbling programs on Feb. 17, 2026.
Mackenzie Walker, a member of the Flag Football team, reflected on the team’s first scrimmage and the excitement surrounding their first victory.
“After playing Clemson and winning 20–6, especially since it was our first scrimmage here at GWU, it felt pretty awesome. It was a really exciting experience because it was the first time we got to compete together and see how everything we’ve been working on would translate onto the field.”
For Walker, Flag Football carries a deeper personal meaning. She became involved in the sport following the passing of her brother, whose passion for football inspired her own love for the game.
“He was in love with all things to do with football, and the love for the game just kept growing!” Walker shared.
As Gardner-Webb’s Flag Football team continues to grow and gain experience, this first scrimmage is more than a first win; it marks the start of new athletic traditions and an opportunity for student-athletes like Walker to help lay the foundation for the school’s program.
